Émilie du Châtelet was fascinated by kinetic energy, meaning the energy of an object due to its motion. She performed experiments studying how kinetic energy is related to an object's speed, and proved that kinetic energy is proportional to the square of the velocity! Émilie also was the first to conceptualize Conservation of Energy, an important law that tells us energy can be transformed into different types, but the total amount of energy in a system always remains the same.
